My Journey Through Burnout and Back to Wholeness
This is a Christian Burnout healing story of a God who not only revives, but restores. Burnout doesn’t arrive with a sudden crash. It creeps in slowly, settling into the places where you’ve been pushing, striving, performing, and surviving for far too long. For me, burnout became a recurring cycle – 23 years of collapsing, rising again, and collapsing once more… until the final fall brought me to a place where I could no longer depend on my own strength.
In that helpless stillness, God met me.
Not with condemnation.
Not with expectations.
But with presence.
This is my journey from burnout to wholeness—messy, human, devastating at times, but ultimately redeemed by the relentless compassion of Jesus Christ.
Growing Up Loved… but Learning to Strive
I grew up in a warm, loving home with two incredible parents and two siblings I adored. And yet, somewhere along the way, a lie took root in my heart:
“You must strive to be seen.”
Being the red-headed, awkward eldest child, I internalised a belief that I had to earn value. No one told me this—but this wounded lens shaped the beginning of everything: perfectionism, people-pleasing, overachievement, and a lifelong compulsion to outrun inadequacy.
The Silent Wounds That Triggered My Collapse
At fifteen, a trusted family member attempted to violate me. Though the act was stopped, the emotional damage remained. When my truth was dismissed, another lie was planted:
“Your voice doesn’t matter.”
At nineteen, I was raped.
I buried that trauma so deeply that it silently rewired my identity. I entered relationships that reflected my brokenness. I lost my sense of worth. I became vulnerable to manipulation, emotional abuse, and shame.
Trauma became the quiet architect of my striving.
Success That Masked Exhaustion
Despite the turmoil within, I excelled professionally. Marketing and PR became my refuge—my proof that I had value, purpose, and control. By my early twenties, I had built a thriving agency with nearly 30 staff.
But inside, I was crumbling.
My health faltered. My sense of self became tied to performance. And when the recession hit and I had to downsize, shame swallowed me whole.
Motherhood, Illness & the Deepening of Emotional Weight
The birth of my first daughter should have ushered in a season of softness and joy—a time of bonding, wonder, and new beginnings.
Instead, it arrived in the midst of a perfect storm.
Alongside the financial strain and chronic sleep deprivation…
Alongside the endless hospital visits for her fragile little body…
Alongside my own body beginning to break under years of unprocessed stress…
…I was also trapped in the suffocating reality of a dysfunctional, toxic, and emotionally abusive relationship with her biological father.
What should have been a sanctuary became a battlefield.
The home meant to be a place of love and safety became instead a place of tension, fear, and emotional instability. Every harsh word, every unpredictable outburst, every moment of walking on eggshells added another layer to my exhaustion. My nervous system lived in permanent survival mode.
Mercifully, God did not leave me in that season.
He led me out of that toxic relationship, and in time, He brought a man into my life who loved me and my daughter with gentleness, steadiness, and genuine devotion.
When my second daughter was born into that marriage, it was a profoundly different experience.
Her birth brought joy, hope, and a sense of being held together as a family — yet even in that blessing, life remained heavy.
Because by the time she arrived, my body was already weakened from years of striving and emotional turbulence.
I was:
- adjusting to marriage
- navigating blended-family dynamics
- trying to build financial stability
- recovering from past trauma
- learning how to mother two girls under tremendous pressure
Her birth was a beautiful, God-given gift — but one layered into an already fragile season.
I adored her deeply, yet I often felt I was pouring from an empty cup. Not because of her, but because I had never truly healed from everything that came before.
This chapter of my life became another quiet step toward eventual burnout — not from lack of love, but from the weight of carrying so much without rest, support, or surrender.
Anger at God, a Miracle, and a Misinterpreted Calling
As my mother battled cancer, my faith wavered under fear and grief. I felt abandoned by God. But He was gently pursuing me.
A miracle softened my heart:
My mother’s suspected liver tumour vanished before her biopsy. The doctors were baffled.
Still, instead of surrendering, I returned to striving. I threw myself into a worship project—beautiful in intention, but heavy in execution. What God meant to heal me, I turned into something I needed to achieve.
Loss, Legal Battles, Single Motherhood & Crushed Faith
Then came the devastating blow.
My husband collapsed on a squash court and died suddenly. Overnight, I became a widow and the sole parent of two young girls. Within 48 hours, legal battles erupted over policies meant for their future.
Not long after, I faced a traumatic court battle to protect my eldest daughter from what she had witnessed in her biological father’s home.
I was traumatised, grieving, financially strained, and emotionally fractured—yet somehow still trying to push forward.
Burnout: Where Everything Finally Broke
Eventually, I could no longer function.
Not emotionally.
Not mentally.
Not physically.
My mind shut down. Anxiety gripped me. My body ached from the weight of unresolved trauma. Even simple tasks became overwhelming. I moved back in with my parents—not to rebuild this time, but to survive.
One night, lying in bed, I whispered:
“God, I can’t do this anymore.”
That whisper became the doorway to my breakthrough.
Meeting Jesus in the Valley of Dry Bones
In the stillness of my collapse, Jesus met me—not with judgment, but with healing. Through worship, journaling, Scripture, and stillness, He began dismantling years of lies, trauma, and false identity.
He showed me:
- My trauma shaped my striving
- My exhaustion was not failure
- My voice mattered
- He was not disappointed in my weakness
- He was not finished with my story
It wasn’t instant. It was rebuilding—layer by layer, bone by bone.
The Restoration: From Surviving to Surrendered
Over time, Jesus:
- Restored my emotional resilience
- Rebuilt my identity
- Reconnected me to my body
- Healed places I thought were beyond repair
- Released me from shame
- Revealed a calling rooted in compassion, truth, and surrender
I learned to rest.
To trust.
To abide.
To stop striving.
And today, I stand not fully finished—but fully held.
Why I Now Help Others Find Their Breakthrough
My healing birthed my calling.
Burnout is rarely just exhaustion. It is the culmination of trauma, misalignment, depletion, fear, over-responsibility, and years of trying to be your own saviour.
But there is a way out.
Jesus still rebuilds.
He still restores.
He still breathes life into dry bones.
If He carried me out of the valley, He can carry you too.
A Final Word to the Weary
If you are exhausted…
If you feel unseen…
If you are overwhelmed, depleted, or secretly falling apart…
Hear me: There is hope.
Not in working harder.
Not in pretending you’re okay.
Not in powering through.
Hope is found in surrender.
In returning to the God who restores all things.
In letting Jesus carry what you can no longer bear.
Your story is not over.
Your burnout is not the end.
Breakthrough is already unfolding.
