During some of my deepest burnout seasons, I began experiencing physical sensations that honestly frightened me.

At times it felt like a tingling sensation moving through my head. Other times it felt almost like warm water washing over my brain. There were moments where my mind felt foggy and disconnected, and others where I felt overstimulated, emotionally flooded, and unable to think clearly.

Because I’m someone who deeply needs to understand what is happening beneath the surface, these experiences sent me down a path of researching burnout, neuroscience, stress physiology, and the chemical and neurological processes taking place in the brain under chronic stress.

I wanted answers.

What was happening to me physiologically?
What was happening chemically in my brain and nervous system?
Could burnout actually affect the brain physically?
Why did my body and mind feel like they were malfunctioning?

What I discovered was incredibly validating:

Burnout is not “just stress.”
It is not weakness.
And it is not all in your head.

Modern neuroscience shows that chronic stress and burnout can create measurable biological, neurological, hormonal, and chemical changes in the brain and nervous system.

Researchers now understand that prolonged stress affects:

When danger appears, the body activates the stress response system:

This survival response is protective in the short term.

Modern life often keeps the nervous system continuously activated through:

Eventually the brain adapts to survival mode.

One of the most important systems involved in burnout is the HPA axis:

This system regulates cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone.

Brain imaging studies using functional MRI scans have shown that chronic stress may alter communication between brain regions.

Observable functional MRI changes can be detected within the limbic system under chronic stress.

Researchers have observed changes involving:

  • Attention systems

  • Executive functioning circuits

  • Self-regulation pathways

Efficient brain function depends on coordination between these systems.

Burnout disrupts that coordination.

Why Burnout Feels Physical

Burnout often includes physical symptoms such as:

  • Digestive issues

  • Fatigue

  • Heart palpitations

  • Sleep problems

  • Increased illness frequency

This occurs because chronic stress affects multiple systems simultaneously:

Burnout is a whole-body condition.

Cortisol Dysregulation & the “Wired But Tired” State

Healthy cortisol rhythms typically:

  • Rise in the morning

  • Gradually decline during the day

  • Lower at night

Burnout is not failure.

A Final Encouragement

One of the most comforting things I discovered while researching burnout is that God designed our bodies with incredible wisdom.

Our exhaustion is not something to shame ourselves for.
Often it is a signal that we have been carrying burdens beyond what we were created to sustain in our own strength.

The beautiful thing about Scripture is that God never asks weary people to strive harder before coming to Him.

He invites them to rest.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

“Be still, and know that I am God.”
-  Psalm 46:10

“He restores my soul.”
-  Psalm 23:3

“But I will restore you to health and heal your wounds,’ declares the Lord.”
-  Jeremiah 30:17

This is especially powerful in the context of burnout because it speaks directly to restoration.


“The Lord sustains them on their sickbed and restores them from their bed of illness.”
-  Psalm 41:3


If you are in a burnout season right now, take heart.

Your brain is not betraying you.
Your body is not failing you.

Perhaps your nervous system is simply crying out for the rest, restoration, safety, and peace that God always intended for you to live from. But Jesus is the ultimate healer and restorer and His word will never return void!  Walk in that truth!
